If you are having a tough time catching fish, Take a Kid Fishing! The Redfish are definitely in transition mode from winter to summer patterns. They have been chased all winter by the Dolphins and Fishermen so they are very wary of any noise in the water. However, using the ambush technique of getting staked out in a small creek around low water near oyster beds and small creek mouths and waiting for the fish to move close with the tide produced some good results this past week. Bait of choice was live Mud Minnows rigged under a cork with a short just over a foot leader allowing the tide to float the cork past points and rips made by the water flowing past the oyster beds. Another method is to work along main river banks where on high water you can find coves or areas between points of big oyster rakes where the tide floods into the marsh and cast into the back of the coves as shallow as you can get a bait to sink to the bottom and wait for the fish to move in. Cut Mullet worked as well as the Mud Minnows. Not fast fishing but with some patience a few whoppers can be landed. Anytime now the Cobia will show in the Broad River, this past week while fishing the flats several Bonnet Head Sharks were spotted and reports of Menhaden near shore says it is about time. So, if you Take a Kid Fishing no matter what, you will be rewarded.
